Pending vs posted: how to read your own statement

Every hold question starts here. Once you can read pending vs posted correctly, half the panic evaporates. Because a pending line is a reservation, not a payment.

The 90-second version

Pending = the merchant asked your bank to reserve money (an authorization). It reduces what you can spend, but nothing has moved. Posted = the transaction cleared and settled; money moved. Pending lines can change amount, disappear entirely, or convert to posted. Posted lines only change via refund or dispute.

Why pending amounts change

Pending charges that will simply vanish

Not every pending line becomes a charge. These evaporate without a trace:

When a pending line is actually a problem

One habit that prevents most hold stress

Judge your money by available balance, not by the transaction list. Available balance already accounts for every hold; the transaction list is a debugging view. If available balance covers your needs, the pending lines are just machinery doing its job on schedule, and if you want the schedule, that's what the estimator is for.
