Debit vs credit holds: same rules, very different pain

Networks make no timing distinction between debit and credit authorizations. The difference is what's being locked: hypothetical spending power, or the money your rent comes out of.

The short answer

Hold durations are broadly the same. But a credit-card hold reduces available credit you probably weren't about to max out, while a debit-card hold freezes real cash, which can cascade into declined payments and overdrafts. For hold-heavy merchants (hotels, car rentals, pumps), use credit for the authorization even if you settle the final bill another way.

Why travel merchants distrust debit

A hold guarantees a credit card payment because the bank has committed credit. A debit hold only reserves what's in the account today, so rental agencies and hotels compensate with larger deposits, credit checks, or by charging the deposit outright (which then returns as a slow refund instead of a release). Some simply refuse debit at pickup. Check the counter policy before you travel on debit-only.

Prepaid cards: read this before using one for travel

Prepaid cards get the worst of both worlds: merchants treat them like debit, and prepaid issuers are the slowest to release holds, 30 days is not unusual for a hotel or rental hold on a prepaid card. Never hand one over for a check-in authorization unless you can afford to lose access to that money for a month.
