Hold questions, answered straight
How long does a card hold last?
Depends on the merchant type and your bank. Typical end-to-end: fuel pumps same day–3 days; restaurants 1–3 business days; hotels and rentals 1–7 business days after check-out/return; cancelled online orders 1–10 days. The hard caps are network rules: Visa authorizations die after 5 days in-store, 10 online, 31 for hotels/car rentals; Mastercard after 7 (final) or 30 (pre-auth). The estimator turns those into dates for your case.
Can my bank just remove a hold if I ask?
Usually only with the merchant's cooperation, the bank is contractually honoring the authorization. Once the merchant confirms release, most banks remove it manually, some via three-way call. The exception: a hold older than its network validity can be cleared by your bank alone. Full scripts in the removal guide.
The merchant says "released", my bank says "pending". Who's lying?
Probably nobody. The release takes minutes–1 day to travel, then your bank posts it on business days (1–3 US; faster EU/UK). Weekends pause everything. Past 3 business days from the merchant's confirmation: hand that confirmation to your bank and ask for manual removal.
Is a hold the same as being charged?
No. A hold reserves money; nothing has moved. It either becomes a posted charge (sale completed) or expires (money simply available again, no refund line, because no money ever left). The pending vs posted guide is the 5-minute foundation course.
Why did the gas station "charge" me $175?
It didn't, the pump pre-authorized the network cap (raised to $175 in the US in 2022) because it couldn't know your fill amount. The real amount replaces it within hours–3 days. Fuel guide.
Do weekends and holidays really delay releases?
Yes. Issuer processing runs on business days, so Friday releases commonly post Tuesday, and bank holidays add more. Holdeta computes US, UK, TARGET (euro-area), Canadian and Australian holidays algorithmically for any year.
I cancelled. Why is it still pending?
Cancelling an order doesn't remove a hold; an authorization reversal does. Sent: released in 1–3 business days. Not sent (just an internal void): the auth expires on its own in ~7–10 days. Either way, no charge posts. Full guide.
How long do security deposit refunds take?
A charged deposit returns as a refund: 3–10 business days after the merchant actually issues it (which is the unpredictable part). No arrival in 10 business days → ask for the ARN and have your bank trace it. Deposit refund guide.
Does a hold affect my credit score?
Not directly. Holds aren't reported. A large credit-card hold does eat available credit while it lasts (and the eventual charge counts toward utilization like any spend). Debit holds have no credit dimension at all.
How accurate is Holdeta?
Every estimate is a window with stated assumptions, bounded by rules that are genuinely hard limits. High confidence for Visa/Mastercard in the US/UK/EU/CA/AU; wider and honestly-tagged for Amex, Discover, prepaid and other countries. The methodology page shows every number's source, and what we deliberately don't claim to know.
