Card holds in Canada

Canada sits between the US and Europe: no hard legal release deadline, but a concentrated banking market where the big issuers behave predictably, and an active federal consumer agency watching them.

What to expect

Canadian issuers typically release holds 1–4 business days after the merchant finalizes. Visa/Mastercard validity backstops apply (5/10/31 and 7/30 days). Pay-at-pump pre-authorization commonly runs CA$100–$200, clearing within a day or two.

The Canadian specifics

Holidays the estimator counts

New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving (October), Christmas and Boxing Day. Computed for any year, with weekend substitutions. Provincial holidays (Québec's June 24, etc.) can add a day at some banks.

Escalation, Canada edition

  1. Merchant, then bank. The two-call sequence.
  2. The bank's internal complaint process (they must publish it), then their external complaints body (OBSI or ADRBO).
  3. FCAC tracks systemic complaints. Worth filing if a bank's holds routinely outlive merchant releases by a week.
